Description

Preface

The vision of ‘‘National Education Policy 2020’’ is to instil among the learners a deep-rooted pride in being Indian, not only in thought but also in spirit, intellect and deeds as well as to develop knowledge, skills, values and dispositions that support responsible commitment to human rights, sustainable development and living as well as global well-being, thereby reflecting a truly global citizen.
The rich heritage of ancient and eternal Indian knowledge and thought has been a guiding light for this new Policy. The pursuit of knowledge (Jnana), wisdom (Pragyaa), and truth (Satya) was always considered in Indian thought and philosophy as the highest human goal. The aim of education in ancient India was not just the acquisition of knowledge as preparation for life in this world or life beyond schooling but for the complete realization and liberation of the self.
The need to integrate Yoga and Sports in education is well recognized as it serves the National Education Policy 2020 to foster holistic development by promoting physical and psychological well-being while also enhancing cognitive abilities. Sports-integration is a co-curricular pedagogical approach that utilizes physical activities including indigenous heritage of Yoga in pedagogical practices to help in developing skills such as collaboration, self-initiative, self-direction, self-discipline, teamwork, responsibility, citizenship etc. Yoga-integrated learning will be undertaken in classroom transactions to help students adopt fitness as a lifelong attitude and to achieve the related life skills along with the levels of fitness as envisaged in the Fit India Movement. ‘Do you know’ provides very useful information to the learner as it is related with projects and activity work. ‘Extension Activity‘ are very important and students learn as they write, discuss, design posters thereby understand the role of activities. ‘Art Integration‘ includes art, music, dance etc. which provides an opportunity for developing their skills as per the National Education Policy 2020.
Students are also given increased flexibility and choice of subjects to study, particularly in secondary school, including subjects in physical education, yoga, arts and crafts and vocational skills so that they can design their own paths of study and life plans. Holistic development and a wide choice of subjects and courses year to year is the new distinguishing feature of secondary school education. There is now no hard-line separation among ‘curricular’, ‘extracurricular’, or ‘co-curricular’ activities among ‘arts’, ‘humanities’, and ‘sciences’, or between ‘vocational’ or ‘academic’ streams.
To achieve the above stated objectives, Yoga has been introduced as an optional subject by CBSE under Skill Education (Code 841). The Textbook on Yoga for class XII written as per the revised syllabus issued by the CBSE has been designed to cater to the needs of students of all streams i.e., humanities, Science and Commerce as well as Vocational stream to integrate Yoga as a part of Life Skill Education. The Textbook includes Competency based questions like MCQ’s, Matching Type, Assertion & Reason Type, Identify Type, Differentiate Type, Pie Chart Type, Flow Chart, Compare Type and Project based questions etc., which upgrade the student’s ability and develop their creative and critical thinking capacity. The study material is supplemented with videos through QR Code of all the yogic practices required for holistic health and well-being. The authors acknowledge the technical assistance to record videos of Yoga experts
Ms. Kritika Batra and Ms. Aarti, which has been encouraged by Mr. Roshan Lal and audio voice-over has been given by Ms. Sarghi Kohli, both Yoga Faculty of Government College of Yoga Education & Health, Chandigarh.
Any suggestions for further improvement of this book will be gratefully acknowledged.
